IAF expresses reservations about election results

The Sunni Iraqi Accord Front (IAF) has expressed its reservations about the outcome of the parliamentary elections, which has resulted in the victory of Iyad Allawi’s al-Iraqiya List.

“From the beginning, the IAF has pointed out that the electoral process was not conducted with a high level of transparency. Serious violations have marred it. Therefore, the front is challenging the results and expresses its reservations about the related results that have been announced,” the front said in a statement published on its web site.

Iraq’s Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) had announced the parliamentary election results on Friday (March 26) in which former prime minister Iyad Allawi’s al-Iraqiya bloc obtained 91 out of the parliament’s 325 seats, followed by incumbent Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki’s Dawlat al-Qanoon (State of Law) with 89 seats, the Iraqi National Alliance (INA) with 70 seats and the Kurdistan Alliance with 43 seats.

1,400 checkpoints inside Iraqi capital Baghdad

There are 1,400 check points inside Baghdad, screening individuals and vehicles for weapons and explosives, said an Iraqi military spokesman.

Lt. Gen. Qassem Atta, who speaks for the Baghdad Operations Command, said Iraqi troops were on full alert to prevent a return to violence in the aftermath of the general elections.

Atta said Baghdad command had drawn the emergency plan before the election and will continue until a new government is formed.

Asked whether the command would reduce the number of checkpoints in the future, he said: “There is a plan to reduce the number by 5 per cent.”

However, he said the measure would largely depend on the availability of advanced equipment to detect bombs and explosives and “the readiness” of Iraqi security forces.

He said it would take one more year for the troops to be ready.

Asked whether there were fears of an upsurge in insecurity in light of the results of latest elections, he said: “I foresee no security vacuum … the plan (we have) has put all possibilities into consideration.”

He denied allegations that Iraq security forces suffered from sectarian affiliation and that a change in government or prime minister, who is the commander-in-chief, might plunge the country into another cycle of violence.

“The basic task of the security establishment is to guard the constitution … Its relations with the commander-in-chief is not related to the person but to the office … I do not think there will be changes … whether the outgoing Prime Minister Noor al-Maliki gets a second term or some else replaces him.”
