One other note, I would NOT recommend using the services of any big store to fix anything. Rather use a small, local shop that will usually be far more knowledgeable and accomodating.

These days you can buy an IDE/SATA drive to USB connector, which cost about $25 I think. Just plug the USB end to a working computer and the other end to the dodgy hard drive and you should be able to retrieve all the data you need. I've used it a few times in a corporate environment with great success. Hope this helps.
