Finding a customs broker is similar to looking for other services such as a doctor or a lawyer—hunting for a bargain may sacrifice the quality of service you end up with. Customs brokers are meant to protect you from risk, and you want to find one that’ll do exactly that.

Here’s a list of tactics I developed to help you find a customs broker that best fits your business needs:

Find someone straightforward: When it comes to customs compliance, you want a customs broker that gets straight to the point. Be aware of customs brokers who only tell you what you want to hear.
Emphasize both proactive & reactive thinking: Find a customs broker who not only helps you avoid risk, but also helps with damage control if things go wrong.
Look out for empty promises: If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. For example, any customs broker offering speedy border crossings is probably cutting corners somewhere. Remember, your customs broker helps to avoid risk, not take on more.
Encourage and expect lots of questions: To ensure customs compliance, make sure your customs broker looks at your business in the same detail as a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) audit will in the future. A variety of relevant questions make it clear that your customs broker is paying attention and not just telling you what you want to hear.
Never sacrifice quality: Customs compliance is an area where your primary focus should be service quality, not cost. You want a customs broker that strives for perfection and has the tools and services to help your business reach its goals.

If somebody's living in Canada and needs reliable custom brokers to get goods from all over the world, here is a good brokerage company https://clearit.ca/. These guys can also help with buying a car from abroad.
