Now that you know what you need to have in cleaning wood floors, here are the steps you need to follow when cleaning wood floors.

If the wood floor you are cleaning is regularly swept and maintained, you would not have a problem cleaning it up. Additionally, if the wood floor area does not receive high traffic daily, then the wood should be in great condition and would only need routine cleaning.

Step 1:
Make sure that you have all your cleaning tools with you before you go into the area where you are cleaning. This is to avoid having to go in and out the area you are cleaning and inadvertently bringing in dust and debris from other areas. Also, place a mat at all entrance points to prevent other people from coming in and out of the area while you clean.

Step 2:
Moving furniture around on a wood floor should be done carefully but you do have to remove furniture for you to be able to clean better. There are “gliding” pads that you can buy in a number of supplies stores so make sure to have some handy. Place these pads under the furniture or beneath the legs of chairs or tables before moving furniture about.

Step 3:
Sweep the whole area thoroughly with the soft bristle broom. Use a dustpan to pick up accumulated dust, dirt and debris.

Step 4:
Vacuum the whole area using the soft bristle attachment to avoid scratching the wood floor. Vacuuming ensures that all the dust and debris left after sweeping is taken care of. In addition, vacuuming ensures that dirt in between crevices in the floor is taken away as well.

Step 5:
Check the wood floor for crevices where liquid floor cleaning solutions might seep through and make sure to remember where they are. Inform your client of these spots and advise them to have it repaired. Spills on spots like these might lead to seepage and then warping of the wood.

Step 6:
Ask the client if the wood floor they have has a polyutherane finish or if it has been sealed and protected from within. If the wood floor has not been treated with any of the above, dry dust mopping is recommended. However, if the woo floor is protected, you can apply wood cleaning solution of choice with the mop you have. Make sure to apply in one direction only. This prevents unsightly streaks from developing.

Step 7:
If the wood floor still looks dull after applying the cleaner, polish and buff the floor. Use a different mop in order to prevent cleaning solution and the polish from mixing, making it harder for you to produce the luster that you want.

Step 8:
If the mats at the entrance have been soiled, change them to fresh ones before leaving the area.

Sometimes, you will be asked to clean wood floorings that receive high traffic. This means the floors might have scratches, dents or stains. Here’s how you can clean up the area.
