Setting up a cleaning business is like any other endeavor – one of the first things you need to do is to choose which specific area you could start on. It will not be wise to diversify too early in the program since you would want to establish your reputation in one area first. When you have become a household name (in the general sense, meaning, most people know you), then maybe you could look into the possibility of encompassing another.

There are three cleaning service arenas you could choose from.

The first and probably the most prudent of all three is residential cleaning. The skills and equipment involved in this area of the cleaning industry is very familiar to everyone. You base the quality of your service on how you would want your own home to be cleaned. Some of the services that you can include employ the vacuum, a mop, and rags. Window cleaning is quite tedious work; especially if the windows are large or high, which means you will need to have a ladder or climb up so you can charge extra for it.

Whether you are doing the cleaning on your own or you send one or two employees to the house depends on how big the house is. Cleaning a smaller house could easily take up a whole day if it is just a single person cleaning. So the larger the house is, the more people there should be in the cleaning team.

If you already have a team of cleaners, make sure that they always look neat and presentable and that their uniforms are comfortable to work in. Also, have a friendly looking crew and make sure that you have run background checks on each to know that they are trust worthy.

The second type of cleaning service is carpet cleaning. This is the only truly specialized service of the three since their only focus is to get carpets clean. Since cleaning carpets is very time –consuming, it is not unusual that it has created an individual niche in the cleaning industry. Also, there are special equipment and chemicals needed to clean carpets so it’s a pretty pricey endeavor to get into this business.

If you decide that carpet cleaning is where you will be most effective at, and then make sure that you know your carpets. There are different types of carpet and some would require a different cleaning technique than the others. Usually, when a client contacts you, you will have to go to the site or have someone else go to distinguish what type of carpet it is, how large the carpeted area is, how much stain can be removed and what marks will stay. That would then be the time to create a costing, considering how much time will be used up to shampoo, what type of shampoo will be used, and how much time is needed for drying. Always be upfront about the time and the price to your clients.

Lastly, you can also choose to go into commercial cleaning services. This is the most expensive and most challenging among the three since this entails a whole lot of workload from cleaning toilets to offices. Much care is needed because a cleaning disaster may cause the office to temporarily shut down. If you get into this business, you will need bonds and insurance. Nonetheless, of the three types, commercial cleaning services would be the most profitable.
